Dale “Buffin” Griifin (RIP)

Mott the Hoople drummer Dale “Buffin” Griffin passed away January 17 at age 67 from early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Buffin was born Terrence Dale Griffin in Herefordshire, and began playing in bands in his teens. Amongst his early bands was the Soulents, which also included future Mott bassist Pete “Overhand” Watts” on guitar. Another band of the area was the Buddies, which included future Mott members guitarist Mick Ralphs and singer Stan Tippens.

In 1966 Watts, Ralphs and Tippens formed The Doc Thomas Group, who played extensively in Italy and released an album there. When gigging in the UK however they used the name Silence. Buffin and keyboardist Verden Allen (who had played with Ralphs in Jimmy Cliff’s backing band) joined the band in 1968, They began making demos, and after being turned down by a number of labels, DJ/ A&R man producer Guy Stevens (who would later produce the Clash’s “London Calling”) became interested in the band. However Stevens wanted to change singers. They recruited singer Ian Hunter, and Tippens became the band’s road manager, and sometime backing singer. Stevens also insisted on renaming the band Mott the Hoople, after character in a novel he had read while in prison. Stevens vision for the band was the power of the Rolling Stones combined with the intellect of Bob Dylan.

Stevens got them signed to Island in 1969 and produced their debut, which was critically acclaimed but sold only so-so. The band built up a strong reputation as a live band, but all four of their albums sold only modestly, including 1971’s “Brain Capers”, which some consider their best work ever. In 1972 Mott the Hoople were on the verge of breaking up when fan David Bowie offered to write them a song, produce their album and bring them in under his management company. Bowie offered the band “Suffragette City”, but they turned it down, hoping instead to record another Bowie song “Drive-In Saturday”, but Bowie wanted to keep it for his own (and it became a big hit for him in the UK). Finally they set up on “All the Young Dudes” which Bowie played for them on acoustic guitar in his publisher’s office. It went to #3 in the UK, and gave them their first top 40 hit in America.

Allen left the group, unhappy that few of his songs were being used, and formed Cheeks, with future Pretenders James Honeyman-Scott and Martin Chambers. He was replaced by Morgan Fisher (now long a Tokyo resident). Mott the Hoople’s next album “Mott” did even better and was a major hit in the States.

However in 1973 guitarist Mick Ralphs left the band to form the super group Bad Company, and Ariel Bender from Spooky Tooth joined. Now in high gear, in 1974 Mott the Hoople toured America with a then little known band called Queen opening (years later Fisher would tour with them as a sideman).

The next album “The Hoople”, co-produced by Buffin, also charted well. A live album was recorded on which Buffin had solo production credits. It was released to coincide with the announcement that the band was breaking up in November 1974. Ian Hunter went solo and took along former Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, who had briefly joined Mott the Hoople in their last days. For awhile Buffin, Watts and Fisher played under the name Mott, and later as British Lions. Buffin however also took to producing other bands and produced Hanoi Rocks, New Model Army and the Cult. He also produced number BBC sessions for John Peel, including sessions by Nirvana,Smashing Pumpkins, Pulp and OMD.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease at the young age of 58. Mott the Hoople reunited in 2009 for five sold out shows, but by that time Buffin’s condition was quite poor, and drum duties were performed by the Pretenders' Martin Chambers, also of Herefordshire, and Buffin only appeared for the encores.

Dale “Buffin” Griffin is survived by his long-time partner Jean Smith.
