A Summer’s Midnight with Eri -review of “Eri Ono Live at Pit Inn Vol.2 ”
I could not remember the last live performance by Japanese jazz musicians to be remembered as legendary, or historical one, and it must have been quite a while now. But the one by Eri Ono, August 2018 has established the reputation as the legendary performance, within a year. Missed the chance to be there, I could imagine how successful enough the performance was. Saxophone player, Tetsuro Kawashima, who is regular member of Eri’s ensemble, told me so many people there at Pit Inn, shared the greatest moment of the music with Joy, and the review of the performance by Masahiko Yuh, assured me the rumor was true. Luckily, we can relive this performance through CD, and DVD. Thanks to the fidelity to Eri’s artistry, by her production team.
Now we have “Vol.2”, sequel of “Vol.1”, which unveils the rest of footage from 2 day live at Pit Inn. 8 songs on it, including her compositions make up whole nights with “Vol.1”. There you can feel the uniqueness, achieved only by Japanese Jazz Musician. It is not the consummation of jazz as musical expression, but its realization through the acts of musicians that surprises me most. Also, musical statements by each musician have exposed their genuine uniqueness which you can hardly experience by their own. CDs could have compiled not whole songs but selected. This is what usually records company does. Unveiling whole recorded footage is always the second option if you are not John Coltrane, or Astol Piazzolla. Releasing complete footage of two nights at Pit Inn on 2 CDs by Japanese artist is exceptional idea but this idea brings in rough air of these nights successfully and beautifully. We can enjoy the music as a fresh meal roughly plotted on the dish.
Open attitude to the music turning dazzling experience on, drives chemical imagination inside the brain and leads to the question of “When and where on the earth has this happened ?”. And eventually you will know this has happened at Pit Inn in that rather dry ambience, which gives you unusual experience. Whole music on the CD will surely bring back old timer who has once paid good attention to Eri’s music again. New comer can be motivated to stay tuned with her music by these CDs, I think. And I can say that jazz on summer nights were such awesome ones.
