今年のグラミーで〈最優秀オルタナティヴ・ミュージック・アルバム〉を含む4部門に輝いたアラバマ・シェイクス。そのフロントウーマン、ブリタニー・ハワード率いる（とされている）覆面バンドが、絶妙なタイミングで初作を投下だ! 脇を固めるのはフライ・ゴールデン・イーグルとクリア・プラスティック・マスクスのメンバーで、いずれも古き良きロックンロールを鳴らすのはお手のもの。そう、大まかな音楽スタイルはアラバマの時とさほど変わらない。しかし痛烈な政治批判も盛り込む本隊に対し、こちらはパーティーやロック讃歌、恋愛についての云々など、良い意味でからっぽ系。ドスの効いたパワフル歌唱を柱にドカンと立て、ノリノリのロカビリー、グラマラスなガレージ・パンク、爆音ブルース……と、全10曲を30分強で駆け抜けていく。サイド・プロジェクトらしい肩肘張らないラフな演奏／音の質感もプラスに作用。これを聴きながらハイウェイをカッ飛ばして……とか想像するだけで興奮するな。

A masked band (supposedly) led by Brittany Howard, the front-woman of Alabama Shakes that won 4 Grammy awards including the [Best Alternative Music Album] this year, has dropped the first album at a perfect timing! Supporting her are the members of Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Mask, who really know how to play rock 'n' roll music of good old days. As you may have guessed, their musicality is not quite different from Arabama's. However, while Alabama Shakes sometimes incorporates political lashing in its music, THUNDERBITCH features party and rock tunes as well as love songs, which are more brainless in a good way. Placing powerful, gruff singing at the core of music, the album features a total of 10 tracks running for 30 plus minutes, including vigorous rockabilly, glamorous garage punk and roaring blues. The relaxed, rough-edged performance and sounds just like a side project band also has a positive effect on it. Just imagining driving on a highway listening to this album makes me excited.
