Fujioka Minami & The Morones “S.N.S”
By Taihei Kubota
Cute, friendly, and maniac!? In these times of [diversity], what is the sentimentalism depicted by the band who plays music so cheerfully?
Fujioka Minami & The Morones was formed in 2013 consisting of three members; singer/guitarist Minami Fujioka who is also a TV talent, keyboardist Hiro Hiroya a.k.a. Hiroya Morooka who has been showing his ability in supporting lives/recordings of all types of music including roots music such as jazz and blues, and guitarist Nelo, who is also a member of the power pop band The Oranges, under the name of Nelo Orange. On the first album “Hajiki (that stands for HAyasa, JIkan and Kyori, meaning Speed, Time and Distance respectively, coming from a math formula)” released this spring, the cheerful band entertained us with their friendly pops that has, floating around the gaps between the notes, an atmosphere of moratorium of the neighborhood of the Chuo Line, one of the railway lines in Tokyo which they are based around.
“[(Being in a) band is fun!] is our mantra. The listeners are enjoying our music like girls pops, however, there are times we also do maniac things that deserve to be called ‘Procol Harum of the Heisei era.’” (Hiro Hiroya)
“Though making fancy songs, Morones still has these somewhat unrefined elements.” (Fujioka)
Their new album “S.N.S” is colored by the elements of jazz and funk music deeper than the previous work as the following songs shows; the lead track “Wink Killer” which is a melodious jazz-rock tune, the slow number “Sorede Sorede? (meaning And Then?)” with a neo-soul flavor, and the disco tune “Do-wasure in the night (meaning Memory Lapses in the night)” with Fujioka’s rap performance. It could be said that this is an album that is simply connected with the so-called trend [City Pop], as hinted in the previous release, though, in their music, the [songs] in which the lyrics and the playing intertwine luxuriantly, seem to shine through, more than the sound details of their music. Exactly as if it delivers sentimentalism obtainable only from communications in the real world, not in the world of SNS, accompanied by a deep cutaneous sensation from walking the streets or chatting with friends.
"Guitar could be more upfront in some of the songs, but I think being keyboard-ey makes our music more unique, and the sound image spread out more. Making songs using the keyboard is one of the factors determining the band’s characteristics." (Hiro Hiroya)
"Thanks to SNS, the world we give thought to is obviously getting wider than it used to be. Though, I think the reality of 2015 is that our sense of reality is falling far behind the world that is getting wider senselessly. ‘How can I get a sense of reality, then?’ That kind of an [S.O.S] messages is also contained in “S.N.S.” Diversity of sounds of the tracks that come and go between various genres — the album links to SNS, also in terms of [diversity]. I’d like to actively spread the fact that Morones has a variety of music.” (Fujioka)
