アイドルのお客さんはMIX(曲を盛り上げるための掛け声)を打ったりするじゃないですか。

LUI FRONTiC AKABANE JAPAN - "Rep Me"
Interview & text by Kazumi Namba

LUI FRONTiC AKABANE JAPAN, the former LUI◇FRONTiC◆MATSUKUMA JAPAN, made a bold decision to do a solo concert in February 2014 immediately after the band came together. This was back when PourLui on vocals was mainly working with the idol group Bis. The members were yet to take form as a real band.
“We weren’t a band at all. We’ve only met a few times when we had our first solo concert. PourLui was on a tour with BiS. I really didn’t know where we stood as a band or if we actually were a band…” (Tempest Takeuchi / Guitar)
“We were blindly performing and I was like, ‘Where is this gonna lead, seriously?’.” (Ohara Just Begun / Bass)
LUI FRONTiC AKABANE JAPAN didn’t come together naturally. This band is a mishmash of different types of artists coming together for one purpose, which gradually took form after many trials and errors.
“That’s right. It was all ‘business’ when we began.” (PourLui / Vocal)
“We were from different backgrounds. We (the guys) were from a band and she was an idol. There were so many things we had to figure out along the way. Idol fans love MIX (a rhythmic cheer from the audience that energize the song) and that alone was something completely different from what we’re used to.” (Takeuchi)
“But BiS fans were listeners of wide variety of music, so it wasn’t bad in that sense.” (Ohara)
“You guys had never done Cheki Kai (an instant photo session with idols) before, right?” (PourLui)
“The first time was painful for us (laugh)” (Ohara)
“The fans came to see PourLui, so they must’ve been like why do I need to shake hands with some ‘dudes’… that’s what I thought.” (Takeuchi)
“On our first year as a band, I struggled to digest the whole experience and how to keep my mind set. I really didn’t care for handshake events at first, but I gradually started to remember the faces of our fans. That was pretty amazing, seeing them come back.” (Ohara)
After many ups and downs, the band formed bonds within themselves and with their fans and now LUI FRONTiC AKABANE JAPAN has finally made a major debut. The single cut “Rep Me” is composed by Takeuchi. This song is unusually constructed pretty straightforward (as they tend to have a lot of tricky and intricate song structures!), and the result is the catchiest rock song in the band’s history. This is the first time Takeuchi’s song is recorded on LUI FRONTiC AKABANE JAPAN’s CD.
“After a year of struggle, my song finally made the cut. Our style is one hundred -percent ‘by competition’. Our band started out as business, so the selection of songs has that stance too. When our band came together, we already had all the songs ready for us. For me it felt strange to have “all the songs ready”, but in the end the best songs gets selected. It doesn’t matter who wrote it, it’s as simple as that.” (Takeuchi)
“When we first played “Rep Me” in front of a live audience, the fans improvised a MIX! (laugh)” (PourLui)
“I was like ‘a MIX for this song, really?’ (laugh) It’s doable if the bars aren’t ‘off’. There are lots of rock bands that use four on the floor and I sometimes want to use it too for a dramatic effect but I don’t want our music to seem so easy. So I made this song without using that beat and it got chosen. I didn’t see that coming.” (Takeuchi)
“We’re not fixated on being an ‘idol’ or a ‘band’ anymore. I want them to MIX or kecak, whatever they want. We should do what we want and hopefully people would love us for it. We might’ve started out as a business band, but now we’re free to act outside of the box. It’s only going to get better from here.” (PourLui)
