デヴィッド・ホルムズが新プロジェクトを始動。パートナーに選んだのは、キーボード奏者で作曲家のキーファス・シアンシアと歌手のジェイド・ヴィンセントだ。もともとキーファスとジェイドは自分たちでメンバーを集め、クラブで演奏していたらしく、そこにDJとしてデヴィッドが招かれたことからユニットに発展したという。このファースト・アルバムのレコーディングにはジム・ケルトナーやウェイン・クレイマーなど大物ミュージシャンも参加。昔のヨーロッパB級映画のサントラを思わせる妖しげなムードが漂うなか、作品の主役は気怠い女性ヴォーカルだ。生のアンサンブルとエレクトロニクスを融合させたサウンドから甘美なメロディーが滴り落ち、60年代のガールズ・ポップやガレージ・ロックに刺激を受けた楽曲がねっとりと絡まりながら渦巻いていく。アンビエントな心地良さに漂ううちに気付けば暗黒の世界へ辿り着いてしまったかのような、サイケデリックな音響絵巻は圧巻。

David Holmes sets out a new project, UNLOVED. Chosen as his partners are keyboardist-cum-composer Keefus Ciancia and singer Jade Vincent. Ciancia and Vincent initially formed a band and were already playing at clubs before Holmes was invited to DJ, which led them to develop into the project. In recording their first album, they featured some of the biggest musicians like Jim Keltner and Wayne Kramer. While the album creates a mood that recalls the sly, old soundtracks for '80s B movies, Vincent's languid voice steals the show. Inspired by '60s pop girl groups and garage rock, the songs sultrily entwine and swirl with the ensemble of live instruments and electronics blended into a sound that dribbles mellifluous melodies. They construct an overwhelming, psychedelic, sonic narrative as if their pleasant, buoyant ambience lures the listener into a pitch-black world.
