全員がウサギの覆面を被り、ツイン・ヴォーカル&ギターにDJを加えた謎の7人組。スリップノットが主催する〈KNOTFEST JAPAN 2016〉への出演が突然発表されて大きな話題を呼んだミクスチャー・バンドからファーストEPが到着。冒頭曲“CRAZY N' SANE”を聴けばわかる通り、リンプ・ビズキットのデビュー作をモロに連想させるラップ・メタルを堂々と鳴らし、インソレンスへのオマージュ的な歌詞にもニヤッとさせられる。あくまで2000年前後のニュー・メタルを踏襲したようなアレンジで、重さと激しさ、ヒップホップ的な軽快なリズムやレゲエ調の心地良いフレーズを採り入れている点もミソ。聴き手によって好みは分かれるかもしれないし、本気なのかお遊びなのか判然としない部分もあるが、ラップと歌メロが掛け合う絶妙なコンビネーションと、沸点の高いブチ切れ度満点の音像を素直に楽しみたいところだ。ラストに収録されたデジタル色の強いダンサブルなリミックスもカッコイイ。

With rabbit masks on, mysterious seven-piece CRAZY N' SANE consist of two vocalists, two guitarists and a DJ as well as a rhythm section. Having made stirs with a surprise announcement about the appearance on Slipknot’s KNOTFEST JAPAN 2016, the eclectic band drop their first EP. The opening track with the same name, as you might have noticed, blares rap metal that clearly recalls Limp Bizkit's debut. There are sly moments as some of the lyrics seem to pay homage to Insolence. Based on the traditions of nu metal around the turn of the millennium, "This Mess" takes in heaviness and loudness while light rhythms and pleasant, reggae-influenced phrases also play key roles. The EP might come out divisive depending on listeners and whether it is a serious pastiche or a jokey mockery is anyone's guess. That said, the ferocious sound design and the powerful interaction between rapping and singing are compelling. The dance-oriented cybernetic closing number is also worth checking.
