テクノロジーは音楽ビジネスに革命をもたらす重要な役割を担ってきた。いまや、適度な知識を持っていれば誰でもPCを使って作曲、演奏、録音、配信ができるようになっている。さらにテクノロジーは、映画ビジネスへの参入も容易にしてきた。コスト削減、撮影の単純化、編集などが容易となり、オンライン配信によって映画はより少人数の観客が鑑賞するために制作されるようになりつつある。

音楽ファンにとっては、ビートルズ（「愛しのフリーダ」）など超大物アーティストから、レジデンツ（「Theory of Obscurity（原題）」）のようなカルトな人気を誇るアクトまで、様々なミュージシャンの過去や現在を描く良質なドキュメンタリー映画がたくさん作られるようになったことがうれしい点と言える。しかし、これまで日本で公開されたのは、人気作品のうち数本（「バックコーラスの歌姫たち」、「黄金のメロディ マッスル・ショールズ」など）に限られている。これから、最近USで話題になった音楽ドキュメンタリー映画を紹介する。どれも、日本での公開を検討した方がいいのでは……と思わせるパワーがあるものばかりだ。

 

■「The Wrecking Crew（原題）」
LAを拠点に活躍した伝説のセッション・ミュージシャン集団、レッキング・クルーについてのドキュメンタリー映画。彼らはビーチ・ボーイズ、フランク・シナトラ、モンキーズ、ママス&パパス、サム・クック、エルヴィス・プレスリー、サイモン&ガーファンクル、バーズ、フィル・スペクターなど多くのアーティストのヒット・アルバムで演奏している。グレン・キャンベルやドクター・ジョン、レオン・ラッセルなど、数人はソロでの活躍も知られている。レッキング・クルーはゆるく結びついた集団で、ほとんどが白人男性で構成されていたが、アール・パーマー（史上最多のレコーディング記録を持つドラマーとして知られる）やサックス奏者のプラス・ジョンソンといった黒人ミュージシャン、女性ベーシストのキャロル・ケイ（全盛期にはアメリカ合衆国大統領よりも稼いでいたと言われる）なども参加していた。本作はレッキング・クルーのギタリストだったトミー・テデスコの息子、デニー・テデスコが監督。数年がかりで制作を進め（2008年に初回ヴァージョンが公開）、今年になってやっと資金を調達でき、多数の大ヒット・ナンバーを含む100曲以上の楽曲の使用許諾を得ることができたようだ。

 

■「Beautiful Noise（原題）」
80年代に登場し、メインストリームにはならなくとも根強い支持を受けている音楽ジャンル〈シューゲイザー〉についてのドキュメンタリー映画。この映画は、シューゲイザーに深い愛情を注ぐマニアックなファンによるDIYプロジェクトと言える。マイ・ブラッディ・ヴァレンタイン、ジーザス&メリー・チェイン、ライド、スロウダイヴ、コクトー・ツインズらの映像が大量に収録されている。

 

■「All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records（原題）」
USの有名CDショップ〈タワーレコード〉についてのドキュメンタリー映画。60年代に創業者ラス・ソロモンの父親が経営するドラッグストアのサイド・ビジネスとして始まり、80～90年代には1年間で10億ドル以上を売り上げる世界的チェーンにまで成長、2006年に破産に至る（独立して残った日本とアイルランドを除く）までを描く。この映画は、タワーレコードが誕生した街・カリフォルニア州サクラメントで生まれ育った俳優、コリン・ハンクス（トム・ハンクスの息子）によって制作された。タワーレコードの歴史を振り返る映像、従業員やセレブリティーへのインタヴューなどがフィーチャーされており、日本の映像も少し登場する。

 

■「Sweet Blues: A Film About Mike Bloomfield（原題）」
あまり広く知られていないが、多くのギター・フリークにとってはビッグ・ネームであるギタリスト、マイク・ブルームフィールドについてのドキュメンタリー映画。エリック・クラプトンは彼について「2本足がついた音楽だ」と表現したことがある。マイクはシカゴで裕福なユダヤ系の家庭に生まれ育ちながら、10代からブルースに魅了され、彼の熱意と明らかな才能を認めてくれる年上の黒人ミュージシャンたちと付き合うようになった。そして、ポール・バターフィールド・ブルース・バンドの一員として知られるようになる。彼らは革新的なバンドで、若い白人ブルース・ミュージシャンとハウリン・ウルフのツアー・バンドのリズム・セクションのメンバーが融合し、幅広い音楽的影響を受けながらもブルースを核とする音楽を作り出していた。また、マイクはボブ・ディランやジャニス・ジョプリンの人気作品で演奏しており、バンドのエレクトリック・フラッグも結成、名盤『Super Session』を含むアル・クーパーとの共作でも人気を博した。

 

■「Sir Doug & The Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove（原題）」
テキサスを代表する偉大なミュージシャン、ダグ・サームによる音楽の祝宴を描いたドキュメンタリー映画。カントリー、ブルース、テックス・メックスに造詣が深く、60年代に当時盛んだったヒッピー運動から影響を受け、それらすべてが彼の音楽に詰め込まれている。5歳でプロ・ミュージシャンとして歩み始め、アルバム『Mendocino』『She’s About A Mover』などを発表したサー・ダグラス・クインテットのリーダーとして最も有名で、その後もボブ・ディラン、ドクター・ジョン、グレイトフル・デッド、クリス・クリストファーソン、ウィリー・ネルソンといった仲間と共演。彼は気軽に多くの友達を作る温厚な人だったらしい。

 

■「Heaven Adores You（原題）」
カルトな人気を誇るシンガー・ソングライター、エリオット・スミスについてのドキュメンタリー映画。2003年におそらく自傷による謎の死を遂げているが、その原因はいまだ明らかになっていない。最初はヒートマイザーというロック・バンドで活動していたが、ソロ転向後はより繊細で内省的なアコースティックなスタイルを選んだ。マイナーでありながら崇拝者を持ち、97年には映画「グッド・ウィル・ハンティング／旅立ち」に使用されたことで彼の楽曲はオスカーにノミネートされた。新たな名声や収入を手に入れたにもかかわらず、鬱状態になることが増え、ドラッグやアルコールを乱用するようになった。しかし彼の没後もその人気は高まり続けている。

 

■「The Case Of The Three Sided Dream（原題）」
型破りで驚異的なジャズのマルチ・プレイヤー、ローランド・カークについてのドキュメンタリー映画。幼少期に盲目となった彼は多数の管楽器を奔放かつ独自のスタイルで演奏、夢からのインスピレーションによって突き動かされ、急進的な政治意見を含めて様々な話題について率直に発言しながらも、ユーモアに溢れていた。夢から影響されて改名や作曲を行い、同時に3本の管楽器を同時に演奏することに決め、それを実行した。また、息継ぎなしで楽器を長く吹き続けることができる〈循環呼吸〉という技能の持ち主だった。チャールズ・ミンガス、エルヴィン・ジョーンズ、クインシー・ジョーンズといったジャズ界の大物たちと共作しているが、彼を奇妙でいんちきで過激すぎると見る人もいたようだ。77年に脳卒中で死去したが、後世にインスピレーションを与え続けている。

 

■「MR. DYNAMITE: THE RISE OF JAMES BROWN（原題）」
ソウル・ミュージックの大御所ジェイムズ・ブラウンについてのドキュメンタリー映画で、彼にまつわる数々の素晴らしい映像やインタヴューが楽しめる。複雑な性格で時に風変わりだった彼こそ、音楽が進むべき方向や音楽業界を確実に変化させ、黒人たちの視野の変化を促した存在だった。迫力、グルーヴ、ダンス、ショウマンシップ、猛烈な集中、どれをとっても素晴らしい。この時代に生きていなかった人には彼の音楽が持った影響は想像しづらいかもしれないが、本作はJBの爆発的なエネルギーについてヒントをくれる。

 

■「Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck（原題）」
カート・コバーンは破綻した家庭に育ち、問題を抱えたティーンエイジャーへと成長し、音楽に救いを見出した。地元の友達とニルヴァーナを結成し、インディー・レーベルの〈サブ・ポップ〉からアルバムをリリース。91年にリリースしたアルバム『Nevermind』は世界的大ヒットとなり、〈グランジ〉ムーヴメント興隆のきっかけとなった。スーパースターになるにつれて鬱症状のスパイラルに陥り、胃痛に悩まされ、ドラッグに溺れるようになり、ストリッパーでグルーピーだったコートニー・ラヴにロマンチックなほど夢中になった。カートとコートニーはどちらも問題の多い人物で、多くの人がこのような映画が作られるなんて思ってもいなかっただろう。コートニーはカートの公私にわたるアーカイヴを保有しており、監督のブルット・モーゲンにすべての情報を提供したらしい。トレイラー映像も素晴らしい。

 

■「Looking for Johnny ジョニー・サンダースの軌跡」
ニューヨーク・ドールズのギタリスト、ジョニー・サンダースについてのドキュメンタリー映画。彼はロックンロールのけばけばしいスタイルを確立し、パンク・ジェネレーションにもインスピレーションを与えた。多くの人にとってアイコン的存在である一方で、彼はドラッグにひどく溺れた問題のある人物だった。依存やトラブルを抱えながら長年演奏を続けたが、ついにはニュー・オーリンズにて謎の状況で死を遂げた。今作は日本でも公開(4月25日～)。

 

ほかにもチェックする価値あるドキュメンタリー映画をリストアップしておこう。ローランドの有名なドラムマシンについて描れた「808（原題）」、フェラ・クティについての「Finding Fela（原題）」、インターネットで無料公開されている、たった18分間だが素晴らしい「Cerrone（原題）」（※ディスコ・プロデューサー／ドラマーのセローンについての作品）、「Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me（原題）」（※伝説的ポップ・バンド、ビッグ・スターについての作品／2013年)、ジェフ・バックリーについての「グッバイ・アンド・ハロー 父からの贈りもの」(2012年)、ハリー・ニルソンについての「Who Is Harry Nilsson?（原題）」(2010年)、「Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings（原題）」（ジェイク・シマブクロについての作品）(2012年)など。そして、女優エイミー・アダムスがジャニス・ジョプリンを演じる伝記映画「Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can（原題）」、「Wax Trax Documentary（原題）」（WAX TRAX! RECORDSについての作品）、エイミー・ワインハウスのドキュメンタリー映画が製作中らしい。

Music Documentaries

Technology has played a significant part in revolutionizing the music business by making it possible for anybody with a modest amount of tech savvy to compose, perform, record and distribute music via their computer. Likewise, technology has also made the film business more accessible by bringing down costs, and simplifying filming, effects, and editing. This coupled on-line distribution has allowed films made for smaller audiences to be made and seen. For music freaks one of the benefits is that there are now a large number of quality documentaries about musicians past and present, from mega-stars like the Beatles (“Good Old Freda”) to obscure cult artists like the Residents (“Theory of Obscurity”). Unfortunately so far only a few of the top ones (“Twenty Feet From Stardom”, “Muscle Shoals”) have reached Japanese shores. The following are recent documentaries that are making a buzz in America, that powers that be might consider importing-

- “Wrecking Crew” - is about the legendary LA session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew, who played on hit records by the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, the Monkees, the Mamas and the Papas, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Simon & Garfunkel, the Byrds, Phil Spector productions and many more. Some who went on to solo fame such as Glen Campbell, Dr, John and Leon Russell. The loose net group was mostly white male but included blacks like Earl Palmer (reportedly the most recorded drummer in history) and saxophonist Plas Johnson and female bassist Carol Kaye (who says at her peak that she made more money than the President of the USA). The film was made by Denny Tedesco, son of Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film was in the making for years (a version was first shown in 2008), but it took until this year for Tedesco to find the money and make agreements on over 100 songs that were used in the film, many of them big hits.

- “Beautiful Noise” is a documentary about the music genre known as “shoegaze” which emerged in the 80’s, and has maintained a strong following every since, if mostly beyond the mainstream. This film was a DIY project made by maniac fans of shoegaze who have a deep feel for the music, and includes footage of My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Slowdive and Cocteau Twins, amongst others.

- “All Things Must Pass- the Rise and Fall of Tower Records” – is a film about the famed record store chain which grew from a side business related to founder Russ Solomon’s father’s drug store in 1960 to a worldwide chain doing over a billion dollars a year in sales in the 80’s and 90’s, only to be liquidated in 2006 (except Japan and Ireland which survive independently). The film was made by actor Colin Hanks, who grew up in Tower’s hometown, Sacramento, and features footage throughout Tower’s history, employee and celebrity interviews, and bits about Japan.

- “Sweet Blues” about guitarist Mike Bloomfield. – not a household name, but a titan to many guitar freaks, Eric Clapton said of him “Mike Bloomfield is music on two legs”. Despite growing up in a well-to-do Jewish family in Chicago, from his teens Mike was drawn to the blues, and hung out with older black musicians, who accepted him due to his enthusiasm and obvious talent. He first became known as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, a revolutionary group that mixed young white blues players with the rhythm section of Howlin’ Wolf’s touring band, and created music with vast influences but blues at its core. Bloomfield also played on some of Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin’s most popular material, formed Electric Flag, and the joined forces with Al Kooper, together making popular recordings included the famed “Super Session” album.

- “Doug Sahm and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove” is a celebration of the music of the late great Doug Sahm, who was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of country, blues, Tex-Mex and influenced in the 60’s by the then blooming hippie movement, all of which found their way into his music. He began his professional music career at age 5, is best known as the leader of the group the Sir Douglas Quintet (“Medocino”, “She’s About a Mover”), and he went on to collaborate with the likes of Bob Dylan, Dr. John, the Grateful Dead, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. He was also a warm person who made friends easily and often.

- “Heaven Adores You” is a film about cult singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, who died mysteriously in 2003, most likely from self-inflicted wounds, although the cause was never clearly determined. Smith began in a punk band called Heatmiser, and then opted for a more delicate, introspective acoustic solo style. He maintained a minor but dedicated following until 1997, when his song was nominated for an Oscar for appearing in the film “Good Will Hunting”. Despite the new found fame and income, he became increasingly depressed, and abused drugs and alcohol. His popularity however continued to grow after his death.

- “The Case of the Three Sided Dream” is a film about jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a thoroughly freaky and amazing guy- blind from an early age, he mastered a number of brass instrumentsm some obscure or of his own design, He was moved by inspirational dreams, was outspoken on many topics, including radical politics, and could also be quite humorous. Based on dreams, he changed his name composed songs, and decided that he could play three instruments at the same time, and did. He also mastered circular breathing, allowing him to play extended runs and long sustain. He worked with many of the biggest names in jazz, including Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones and Qunicy Jones, but some saw him as too weird, “gimmicky” or radical. He died in 1977 from a stroke but continues to inspire.

- “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown” is a film about soul music giant James Brown, and includes lots of great footage and interviews. A complex, sometimes even bizarre individual, he absolutely changed the direction of music, changed the music industry, and helped change how black people viewed themselves. His drive, his groove, his dancing, his showmanship, his hard focus are all amazing. If one did not live thru this era it is hard to imagine the impact his music had, but this film gives some hint of the explosive force of James Brown.

- “Kurt Cobain: the Montage of Heck”. Kurt grew up in a broken home, became a troubled teenager, and found salvation in music. He formed Nirvana with local friends and made a modestly popular album for the emerging indie Sub Pop. Then in 1991 Nirvana released “Nevermind”, which became a huge worldwide hit and helped give birth to the “grunge” movement. He reacted to becoming a superstar by spiraling into depression, plagued by stomach problems, lost in drugs, and romantically involved with stripper/ groupie Courtney Love. Both Cobain and Love are controversial figures, and many doubted such a film could ever be made, but Courtney Love says she gave full access to all archives public and private, and let director Brett Morgan have at it. The trailer looks great.

-”Looking for Johnny” about the famed New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders, who created a flamboyant style of rock’n’roll that helped inspire the punk generation. While an icon to many, he was a troubled individual who leapt into the deep end of drugs, and played for years drifting in and out of addiction and trouble, and finally died under mysterious circumstances in New Orleans. Available in Japan now.

Others worth seeking out are- “808” about the famed Roland drum machine, “Finding Fela!” about Fela Kuti, “Cerrone” only 18 minutes, free on internet, excellent, “Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me” 2013, “Greetings from Tim Buckley” (about Jeff Buckley) 2012, “Who Is Harry Nilsson And Why Is Everybody Talk’ About Him” 2010, “Jake Shimabukuro- Life of Four Strings” 2012 Amy Adams as Janis Joplin in the biopic “Get It While You Can” and documentary “Wax Trax: the Documentary” are in the works, and an Amy Winehouse documentary is just getting going.
