音楽スクールでジャズを学んでいた友人同士で結成され、インディー・シーンで十分な下積みを経験してきたボストンの4人組が、いよいよメジャーに進出。〈ポップス〉には聴き手の心を躍らせるような幸福感が不可欠だと思っているのだけれど、その意味で彼らは超一流のハッピーなポップ集団である。乱暴に紹介すると、本アルバムの軸にあるのはウィングスやアバ、ジャクソン5などを想起させるポップスの〈王道〉だ。それを気心知れた仲間同士で気負うことなく楽しみながら作っている様が、サウンドの端々から溢れ出ていて清々しい。とはいえ、決して内輪ノリで小さくまとまっているわけではなく、ジャズの素養に裏打ちされたタイトでグルーヴィーな演奏と、〈カーリー・サイモン以来の大口ブロンド美女〉と称されるレイチェル嬢の、一切の衒いも屈託もない真っ向勝負の素晴らしいヴォーカルからは、プロフェッショナルな自信と心意気が存分に伝わり、それがまた実に気持ち良いのだ。

LAKE STREET DIVE is made up of four friends who met while studying jazz attending the same music school in Boston. After gaining enough experiences in the indie music scene, they have finally made their major label debut. 'Pops' may have to involve a happy feeling that lifts the hearts of the listeners. In that sense, they are a top-notch, happy pop group. In a rough description, I would say this album builds on the 'mainstream' pop music reminiscent of Wings, ABBA and Jackson Five. From the sound they have on this album, it is clear they really enjoy creating music together, feeling easy-going without the slightest pressure. But it doesn't mean their music lacks depth and appeal to others. The tight and groovy performance capitalizing on their expertise in jazz as well as the unpretentious, carefree singing of Rachael, who is called 'the beautiful blonde woman with a big mouth like Carly Simon,' represent their confidence and spirit as professionals, making the album sound all the more refreshing.
