South Penguin’s Alaska
South Penguin, a four piece band that made appearance at the Rookie a Go-Go stage at the Fuji Rock Festival this July, release their debut EP. With Takuro Okada, a former member of Tokyo based disbanded group Mori Wa Ikiteiru, on board as a producer, the EP unfolds stoned soft psychedelic rock over its folk-oriented lead vocal and subtle ensemble in exquisite sonic treatment. Songs like the slow funk of “Cloudy” create a mood akin to Japanese three piece band D.A.N., who have worked with the same engineers, presenting a band that embodies the ongoing scene in Tokyo.
