音楽業界で広がる〈The Show Must Be Paused〉と〈Blackout Tuesday〉

人種差別に対する抗議運動は、ますます音楽業界で広がっている。その最大のものが、〈The Show Must Be Paused〉と〈Blackout Tuesday〉だろう。

〈The Show Must Go On（ショーを続けなければならない）〉という常套句をもじった〈The Show Must Be Paused（ショーを止めなければならない）〉は、アトランティック・レコーズの取締役でブリアナ・アギェマンと元アトランティック役員のジャミラ・トーマス（2人とも黒人女性だ）が発案したもの。彼女たちは、本日6月2日に音楽産業の業務をストップさせることを提案している。その代わりに、黒人コミュニティーをサポートするためには何ができるのかを考えよう、と2人は呼びかける。6月2日は、〈Blackout Tuesday〉と呼ばれるようになった。

〈The Show Must Be Paused〉および〈Blackout Tuesday〉には、音楽産業に携わる多くの企業が賛同した。例えば、ワーナー、ソニー／ATV、Apple Music、BMG、コロムビア、アイランドなどなど。インタースコープは今週、新作をリリースしないと発表した。音楽業界全体を巻き込んだ運動が、今日この日に展開されているのだ。

これにはアーティストも同意し、Instagramには黒一色の〈blackout〉した画像やブラック・カルチャーに敬意を表した写真が数多く投稿されている（今朝、私が自分のInstagramのタイムラインを見たときは、〈Blackout Tuesday〉に関する投稿で埋まっていた）。下に載せたのは、ソランジュの一例である。

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

there aren’t enough words or the right words that could begin to touch the pain of watching our people breathless, life leaving their bodies. yet we still get up and continue to fight a system designed and built on our black deaths....on the backs and necks of our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. want to tell us how to feel, the price of our lives, the degrees of our worthiness. lie and blame our deaths on us while you organize your troops to protect the blood on your hands and protect your partners in murder. tell us not to repeat the history you taught us that WORKED SUCCESSFULLY to build this country on. i just been feeling sick...emotionally, mentally, and physically. sick that Breonna Taylor’s murderer still hasn’t even been charged. sick that mothers have had to watch their children’s last moments this way, with monstrous evil casualty of hands in pockets. still sick that Sandra Bland is not here with us. sick that Erica Garner didn’t just enjoy her birthday. sick for the way this trauma is affecting our bodies and our systems. sick that white supremacy is the deadliest virus indeed. sick that we get no sick days off. and so I truly hope every black spirit and soul does whatever they need to during this time to hold themselves up. whatever tf that may look like. honor your grief and rage however you are being led to. hold on and go all the way into your power however it calls you.

6月2日に何を聴き、何を考えるか

こういった動きが日本の企業やアーティストにあまり広がっていない、伝わっていないことは、なんとも歯がゆく感じる（私は音楽産業に携わりながら、今日もこうして仕事をしている）。当然、日本のポップ・ミュージックやポップ・カルチャーもアフリカン・アメリカンの文化と歴史に負うところが大きいわけで、日本に住むアフリカン・ルーツの人々も多いのだから、日本でも〈The Show Must Be Paused〉と〈Blackout Tuesday〉を行うべきなのではないか（これは、もちろん私のきわめて個人的な意見である）。人種差別の問題は決して他人事ではないのだから。ジョージ・フロイドの死は海を隔てた隣国での出来事だ、と遠巻きから眺めるのではなく、これは自分たちの問題でもあるのだ、と捉えたい。

フロイドの死とそれを受けた抗議活動は、トレイヴォン・マーティン射殺事件に端を発した2013年のブラック・ライヴズ・マター運動とほとんど同形である。また、フロイドが「息ができない」と繰り返し懇願したにもかかわらず死に至った点は、2014年のエリック・ガーナー窒息死事件とまったく同じだ。人種差別、そしてそれに基づく暴力は、なぜ繰り返されるのか。なぜ、黒人たちはむごたらしく死ななければいけないのか。私は、人種差別とそれによる暴力には断固として反対だということを、ここではっきりと言っておきたい。

ポップ・ミュージックおよびポップ・カルチャーを少しでも知る者は、アフリカにルーツを持つ黒人たちの文化や営為がいかに重要で、いかに大切なものであるのかは、じゅうぶん知っているはず。フロイドの死とそれに対するリアクションを知ることは、ブラック・カルチャーとブラック・コミュニティーのアート、レガシー、彼らの苦難の歴史（もちろん、それは現在進行形だ）について改めて考え、音楽文化を通してそれらをリスペクトするための好機だと思う。

6月2日、あなたはどんな音楽を聴くのか。どんな作品に向き合うのか。一度立ち止まって考え、その背景といま目の前にある問題について思いを巡らせてほしいと、私は願っている。
