FliP -“BIRTH”
Interview & text by Hideo Miyamoto

After pouring out every emotion, what was left was the 'love for music'! What is the new version of the band like now, born out of a sensibility from the standpoint of a listener?
What has happened to her? Put in colors, it's like changing from black to rainbow, or in sounds, from impulsive rock to danceable sounds incorporating electronics. Vividly upgrading the image of FLiP, the first mini album "BIRTH" released after transferring to the new label, was born out of the significant emotional change that takes place in Sachiko (Vocal/Guitar: all comments hereinafter also) who wrote all the songs on the album, of 'regaining the sensibility of a listener she had when starting her music career'.
"I was always writing music driven by first impulse. Many of our songs are based on very personal, painful feelings or the power of wanting to cry out. But after pouring out every emotion on the last album "LOVE TOXiCiTY," 2 years ago, nothing came up in my mind anymore."
There was a time she wondered whether to 'continue the band.' Having spent many days reflecting on herself, she came to a simple conclusion, - 'I like music after all.'
"I frequented Tower Records too! I enjoyed reading music reviews written by store staff or looking for interesting album covers. Listening to overseas internet radio all the day and downloading or purchasing favorite CDs - spending everyday like that was so much fun. Then, I thought I should begin by writing a song that makes me want to buy it. Knowing that I can be free from the existing image of FLiP when writing songs, I found a different way of enjoying it."
Musicians who have inspired her include Haim (American pop rock band), Chvrches (Scottish electronic band), Capital Cities (American indie pop duo), Mew (Danish alternative rock band), Years & Years (British electronica trio), Skrillex and Diplo (American DJ duo), MisterWives (American indie pop band), and Oh Land (Danish singer-songwriter and record producer). Simply listing up these musicians clearly shows where FLiP is headed to.
"The songs I like are simply constructed and have some blank spaces in the ensemble of each part, merging to form a single groove. But, the important thing is how much I can put what I think is good into music, putting it through the filter of my own sensibility, and not that I want to emulate Western music. I thought it was time to put myself to the test, though, what made me happier than anything else were favorable responses I received every time the members listened to my newly written songs. Comments like 'I want to buy this!' from them really encouraged me."
Happily enough, the band is celebrating its 10th anniversary. FLiP's new chapter starts here with jubilant sounds.
"I want to write songs that will have long lives. A CD packed only with what listeners want may make someone happy at first, but loses its appeal quite quickly. But, if there's something the writer simply cannot compromise or something deep in a song, the song would be loved forever. I want to keep writing songs, maintaining the sensitivity from the standpoint as a listener."
