UROBOROS

 『ANOTHER ARK』

UROBOROS  "ANOTHER ARK"

Interview and article by Tetsuo Yamaguchi

When battle-scarred champions gather under the name of the serpent, comes in sight is an ark in jet-black!

“For this project, I don’t take that everything I do should be right. I wanted to add the artistry of other artists and creators to mine and see what chemical reaction would come out of it. That was the most meaningful to me. ”
(Keisuke Kurose, composer/manipulator)

Keisuke Kurose from the symphonic metal unit, Asriel, has started his new project, UROBOROS.  All tracks written by Kurose, distinguished band members Aya Kamiki (vocals), Takayoshi Ohmura (guitar), Taizo Nakamura (bass) and Hiroshi Sasabuchi (drums) came together and created their first mini album “ANOTHER ARK.” Including “Black Swallowtail,” the theme song for the animation series of [Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers], the album is complete with gothic and dark fantasy laced sounds, condensed by the exceptional skills of each band member and the arrangements by Tom-H@ck. Still, with all that, the mini-album lines up tracks so perfectly balanced that would mesmerize listeners from core to light, including melodies that instantly sink into your heart or compositions of songs kept within 5 minutes in length.

“I do have the desire to create esoteric and progressive tracks, but I also wanted people to know what kind of sound UROBOROS can make, so this is what we came up with. I grew up with classic band sounds like visual kei (androgynous bands with sounds often influenced by glam rock, punk rock and heavy metal), hard rock or groove-metal, and to that, Tom’s young and new artistry was added, creating something special.” (Kurose)

To those tracks, Kamiki wrote lyrics that encourages one to ‘step out of your immediate despair’, singing it powerfully with her seductive voice.

“I went through a time when I lost sight of what I wanted to do, and stopped making music. So now I prioritize choosing words that express my emotions best that goes along with the track. I think I was able to write something that is almost 100% myself.” (Kamiki)

The title of this album “ANOTHER ARK” was chosen with the band’s hope to carry their listeners on an ark sailing to a surreal world. Taking aboard those who were involved in their music, where will this new project lead to? Maybe the reason why Kurose chose [uroboros], - a serpent that eats its own tail creating a complete circle; a symbol for [integrity] and [cyclicality], as the band name, will shed some light.

“We hope to have many concerts here in Japan but also overseas. I don’t want this band to be a short time gig but something that can last over decades. I want to cherish what we have.” (Kamiki)
