檸檬などで活躍するawaやsoakubeats、大島輝之らを共作者に迎えながらセルフ・プロデュースで作り上げた3作目。現行のビート・ミュージックやジャズを歌謡曲へと消化する辣腕がより豪快に振るわれており、とりわけ、歪なビートに始まってオーガニックな質感のソウルへとスウィッチする“おひっこし”が凄まじい。一方でエレポップめいた楽曲が多く並んでいるのも本作の特色で、時流から解き放たれた軽やかなプロダクションが、もとより非凡なソングライティングの才覚を浮き彫りにしているように思える。淫靡なグルーヴとやるせないメロディーが交錯する“わがまま”や、メロウなニュー・ジャック・スウィング“ふたり”の美しさたるや!　当人の思う〈ポップスの王道〉が明快に感じ取れるキャッチーな一枚。

Yo Irie  "SF"

Yo Irie’s self-produced third album has been released, welcoming co-producers such as awa from Lemon, the city pop-unit, soakubeats and Teruyuki Oshima from sim, the experimental music group. Yo’s skills of transforming current beat music and jazz into kayokyoku (known as Showa-era Japanese pop music) are fiercely on-point. “Ohikkoshi (meaning Moving)” is an incredible track that starts with a distorted beat which flows into an organic soul track. At the same time, this album features many electro pop tracks which highlight the timeless and unrestrained production, not to mention the artist’s extraordinary song writing skills. Obscene grooves and dark melodies interlace in “Wagamama (meaning Selfish)” and the New jack swing-ish mellow “Futari (meaning Two People)” is simply beautiful. A catchy piece that clearly advocates the ‘classic pop’ the artist has in mind.
