東京で新世代らしいポップ・ミュージックを鳴らしつつ、上の世代との橋渡しもしているスカートの澤部渡。ライヴを多数こなす一方、トーベヤンソン・ニューヨークでのリリース、スカートのメンバーも在籍するマンタ・レイ・バレエ作品への全面参加など、小回りの利いた活動を続けている。そしてこの新作は、吉祥寺にあるスタジオ・GOKで近藤祥昭のもと、初めてアナログ録音。バーズを彷彿とさせる“ラジオのように”やドナルド・フェイゲン調の“はなればなれ”、山下達郎風のファンキーなシティー・ポップ“都市の呪文”など曲調はこれまで以上に幅広いが、ザラリとした質感のバンド・サウンドが強調されているのが特徴だ。新たな試みも忘れない澤部は現代屈指のソングライターだと実感できる。

Skirt “Cider no Niwa (meaning Cider Garden)”
As the frontman of Skirt, Wataru Sawabe briskly invigorates Tokyo pop music scene. Besides frequent live performances Sawabe acts as a bridge between the masters and younger generations of musicians and also tactfully devotes his time to variety of activities including official participations in Tove Jansson New York and Manta Ray Ballet where one of Skirt`s member belongs as well. Recorded for the first time on analog at renowned Gok Sound studio by highly-respected engineer Yoshiaki Kondo, the new album is a remarkable song collection including tracks inspired by several big names, The Byrds-ish “Radio No Yoni (meaning Just Like Radio)”, Donald Fagen-like "Hanare Banare (meaning Drifted Apart)" and Tatsuro Yamashita-sort-of funky city pop “Toshi No Jumon (meaning Magic Words of City)” proving his extensive musical versatility and above all ‘soothing band sound’ is notably emphasized throughout the piece. Always innovative Sawabe is an extraordinary songwriter in our age. Absolutely one of a kind.
