スウェーデンはおそらく家具（IKEA）、ファッション（H&M）、自動車（ボルボ）、通信（エリクソン）でよく知られていると思うが、最近ポッブ・ミュージック・ビジネスも急成長している。スウェーデンのポップスと言うと、ほとんどの人が1982年に解散したアバを思い出すだろう。個人的には感心しないが（ついでに〈アバの再来〉と言われたエイス・オブ・ベイスも）、彼らはフワフワとしたポップなブランドとして世界的な成功を収め、一連のビジネスによって荒稼ぎを続けてきた。「ミュリエルの結婚」「プリシラ」などメジャー映画で音楽が使われ、「マンマ・ミーア!」はポップ・ミュージカルのパイオニアとなった。
最近のスウェーデンは音楽的でイノベイティヴであり続け、しばしば成果を上げている。多くの人がなぜスウェディッシュ・ポップがそんなに人気があるのか意見を述べてきたが、理由のひとつとして、非常にメロディーを重視している点が挙げられる。制作も上手いし、英語も上手である。しかし英語は第二外国語なので、アメリカ人やイギリス人のように詞を強調することはない。日本人のファンによっても、スウェディッシュ・ポップはメロディーが重要だという風にしばしば語られてきた。
ある調査によると、音楽の輸出においてUSとUKに続くのがスウェーデンである。950万人という人口を考慮しても偉業と言える。多くの人が驚くかもしれないが、現代のポップ・スターで名前が一般的に浸透している人は少ない。というのも、スウェーデンで大金を稼ぐ長者の多くはアーティストではなく、プロデューサーやソングライターなのである。まず、プロデューサー／ソングライターのマックス・マーティンは、ブリトニー・スピアーズ“...Baby One More Time”、バックストリート・ボーイズ“I Want It That Way”、ボン・ジョヴィ“It’s My Life”、ケイティ・ペリー“I Kissed A Girl”、テイラー・スウィフト“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together（邦題：私たちは絶対に絶対にヨリを戻したりしない）”など多数の楽曲を制作または共同制作して、ビルボード・チャート1位に18曲、全米10位以内に51曲を送り込んだ。ほかにもシェルバックことヨハン・シュステル（ブリトニー・スピアーズ、P!NK、アダム・ランバート、アッシャー、テイラー・スウィフト、マルーン5）、トーレ・ヨハンソン（カーディガンズ、フランツ・フェルディナンド、オーケー・ゴー、BONNIE PINK、トム・ジョーンズ）、Bagge & Peer（マドンナ、セリーヌ・ディオン、シンディ・ローパー、ジェニファー・ロペス）、ヨハン・アベルグ（クリスティーナ・アギレラ、シェール、ジェシカ・シンプソン）、ブラッドシャイ&アヴァント（BoA、少女時代、スカイ・フェレイラ、マドンナ）、ビヨーン・イットリング（クリッシー・ハインド、プライマル・スクリーム、フランツ・フェルディナンド、リッキ・リー／彼はピーター・ビヨーン&ジョンのメンバーでもある）といった多数の人気ソングライター／プロデューサーが存在する。また、輝かしい活躍をしているアーティストも紹介しよう。
1. アヴィーチー
本名ティム・バークリング。弱冠25歳にして、すでに信じられないようなキャリアを築いている。世界で最も報酬が高いDJのひとりであり、リミックスやプロデュースの依頼が殺到していて、有名ブランドと広告契約を交わし、グラミー賞にもノミネートされた。デヴィッド・ゲッタ、マドンナ、レニー・クラヴィッツ、クリス・マーティン（コールドプレイの最新アルバムに参加）といった多数のトップ・アーティストとコラボレートし、自身の名義でリリースした “Levels”や“Wake Me Up”などの曲もヒットさせている。容姿にも恵まれていて、想定資産は6,000万ドル（約70億円）と言われ、最近LAにマンションを1,550万ドル（約18億円）で購入したそう。
2. アイコナ・ポップ
メイン・ストリームで活躍するフォトジェニックなダンス・ポップ・デュオ。“I Love It”が世界的大ヒットを記録したことで羨ましい問題を抱えている。すでにマイリー・サイラスやケイティ・ペリーのツアーにオープニング・アクトとして参加しており、USのTVでもさまざまなかたちで放送され、コカ･コーラやサムスンのCMに起用された。
3. アーチ・エネミー
隣国のフィンランドやノルウェーのように、スウェーデンではへヴィー・メタルが特に盛んである。北欧には特別に強いアートや音楽のプログラムがあり、意図的ではないかもしれないが、華やかなメタル・アーティストたちを輩出してきた。多くのポップ・ミュージックのプロデューサーがシェルバックのようにメタルの世界からキャリアをスタートしている。アーチ・エネミーはメタル・バンドで演奏していたメンバーを集めたちょっとしたスーパー・グループとして結成。彼らの人気が最初に出始めた国のひとつが日本だったが、現在は世界的に人気である。最近10枚目のアルバム『War Eternal』をリリースし、ヴォーカルが脱退するがマネージャーとしてバンドに留まるという異例の発表を行った。
4. モーヴィッツ!
兄弟から成るトリオで、ヒップホップとスウィング・ジャズを融合した音楽を演奏し、馬鹿げた楽しいミュージック・ビデオを制作している。世界中をツアーで回り、来日もしている。ニュー・アルバム『Alaska』をリリースし、USツアーも行った。
5. リトル・ドラゴン
多方面からの影響が混ざり合うエレクトロニック・ポップ・バンド。日本人の父親とスウェーデン系アメリカ人の母親を持つユキミ・ナガノがヴォーカリストを務めている。レゲエ、ジャズ、ヒップホップなど様々な音楽から影響を受けている。自身のレーベルからシングルをリリースした後、UKのインディー・レーベル〈PEACEFROG RECORDS〉と契約。ファンを徐々に増やし、2010年にはデーモン・アルバーンが率いるゴリラズの作品に参加。USでは数々のTVドラマで楽曲“Twice”が使用された。SBTRKT やDJシャドウともコラボしている。2014年に最新アルバム『Nabuma Rubberband』をリリース。
6. レディオ・デプト
クレバーなポップ・バンドは、オリジナル・メンバーのヨハン・ドゥンカンソン以外が入れ替わりながらも活動を続けてきた。柔らかで浮遊感があるロマンチックなスタイルは〈ドリーム・ポップ〉と呼ばれることもあり、ペット・ショップ・ボーイズや コクトー・ツインズなど実際はあまり似ていないアーティストたちとも比較されてきた。急にチャートを賑わせたアイコナ・ポップと違って、1995年からゆっくりとではあるが着実に世界中でファンを増やしてきた。アルバムは3枚発表していて、日本ではインディー・レーベル〈AWDR/LR2〉からリリースしてカルト的な人気を獲た（UKのラブラドール、USのDarla Recordsらもリリースしている）。 ソフィア・コッポラ監督「マリー・アントワネット」で楽曲が使用されたことでブレイク。2011年にはスウェーデンの音楽アワード〈Grammis〉で〈アルバム・オブ・ジ・イヤー〉〈バンド・オブ・ジ・イヤー〉にノミネートされ、『Passive Aggressive: Singles 2002-2010』をリリース。その後、北米、南米、トルコをツアーで回った。
7．ロビン
俳優一家に生まれ、10歳よりプロの声優／シンガーとして活動。16歳のときにダンス・ポップでメジャー・レーベルよりデビュー。2004年にレーベルを離れ、よりエッジを効かせたエレクトロ・ポップ路線に転向。ファースト・アルバム『Robyn』はスウェーデンでチャート1位に輝いた。その後、ベースメント・ジャックス“Hey U”への客演、ロイクソップ、ディプロ、ブリトニー・スピアーズ、スヌープ・ドッグらとのコラボ、他アーティストによるカヴァーなどが実現する。ユーモラスな楽曲“Konichiwa Bitches”もヒット。2008年にはマドンナのヨーロッパ・ツアーでオープニング・アクトを務めた。2014年にロイクソップとのコラボEP『Do It Again』をリリースし、ジョイント・ツアーを行った。
8. レーヴェン
ジプシー、パンク、フォーク、クレズマーといった音楽を融合させた異端バンド。クレイジーに聞こえるかもしれないが、実際クレイジーなのだ。アコーディオン、ヴァイオリン、サックス、ブルガリアの楽器であるタンブーラなどを含む8人編成のバンドだが、どういうわけか激しくロックしている。日本では通好みのインディー・レーベル〈UNCLEOWEN〉からアルバムがリリースされている。 2009年の〈FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL〉で突然大人気となり、岩盤ブースでのサイン会も含めて合計9回も演奏していて素晴らしかった。〈ORANGE COURT〉でのパフォーマンスでは、観客が泥や雨を気にせず踊り狂っていた。2010年にツアーで再来日を果たしたが、次回の来日も待ち遠しい。
9. ジュニップ
ホセ・ゴンザレスとトバイアス・ヴィンターコルンから成るデュオ。繊細で忘れられないフォーキーなサウンドに、打ち寄せるシンセ音が表情を加える。ホセはアルゼンチン人を祖先に持ち、スウェーデンで育っている。最初に組んだのはパンク・バンドだったが、クラシック・ギターの演奏で有名になり、ジョイ・ディヴィジョン、ブルース・スプリングスティーンなどの曲をしばしば演奏していた。ホセがカヴァーしたナイフの“Heartbeats”は大ヒットし、有名なソニーのCMでも使用された。ソロでのキャリアが順調だったことを考えると、元は3人組だったジュニップへの参加にファンは驚いたが、彼は伝統的な道筋を辿るとは思えない。
10. リッキ・リー
エキゾチックにブレンドされたサウンドは、ニール・ヤング、シャングリラス、ディス・モータル・コイルから影響を受けていると彼女は言う。5年間ポルトガルの山頂で暮らし、インド、リスボン、モロッコ、ネパール、NYに住んだことがあるというバックグラウンドを考えると驚かないだろう。デビュー・アルバム『Youth Novels』は国内のインディー・レーベル〈LL Recordings〉からリリースされたが、徐々に世界各国でリリースされた（日本以外で）。軽やかながらもソウルフルなサウンドは仲間のミュージシャンからも注目され、ロイクソップ、エイサップ・ロッキー、カニエ・ウェスト、デヴィッド・リンチとコラボしている。U2のニュー・アルバムにはヴォーカルで参加。彼女の音楽は映画でも広く使われていて、サード・アルバム『I Never Learn』の収録曲“No Rest For The Wicked”はヒット曲となった。
11. ニキ・アンド・ザ・ダヴ
マリン（目を引く金髪の女性ヴォーカリスト）とグスタフ（プロデューサー)によるデュオ。軽やかでドラマチックなサウンドは、キャリア初期よりヨーロッパのラジオDJたちに受け入れられてきた。UKでは〈Moshi Moshi Records〉、USでは〈Sub Pop〉とレーベル契約を結んでいる。
12. NONONO
メンバーはプロダクション・チームのアステマ&ロックウェルと、シンガーのスティーナ。シンセ・ダンス・ポップが主になっている。彼らの曲“Pumpin' Blood”はこれまでに70万枚売れている。
13. ロイヤル・コンセプト
4人組ポップ・ロック・バンド。シングル曲“On Our Way”が世界的にヒット。ゲーム、TV、映画でも多数の楽曲が使用されている。

Sweden is perhaps best known for furniture (Ikea), fashion (H&M), cars (Volvo) and telecom (Ericsson), but these days they are doing booming business with pop music. Naturally what first pops into most people’s minds is Abba, even though they broke-up in 1982. While I personally find them dreadful (and Ace of Base a b-version of Abba), their brand of fluffy pop did find worldwide success, and has continued to rake in money due to a series of shrewd business moves, including including their music in major films such as "Muriel’s Wedding" and "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", and pioneer the staged pop musical with "Mamma Mia!".
These days Sweden continues to be musical and innovative, and often are well paid for it. There have been a number of people who put forth theories about why Swedish pop is so popular, and one is that they are very melody based. They are good at production, and at English, but as English is their second language they do not emphasize lyrics as much as Yanks and Brits. Melody is their thing, and something frequently mentioned by Japanese fans.
According to one survey Sweden follows only the USA and UK in exporting music, quite a feat considering their 9.5 million population. And surprising to many, because not a lot of modern Swedish pop stars names are household names. The reason being that many of Sweden’s biggest money makers are not artists at all, but rather producers and songwriters.
For a start there is producer / songwriter Max Martin, who has written or co-written "...Baby One More Time" fort Britney Spears, "I Want It That Way" for the Backstreet Boys, "It’s My Life" for Bon Jovi, "I Kissed a Girl" for Katy Perry, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" for Taylor Swift and the list continues a long while, 18 number one hits in Billboard, 51 top ten songs in the USA. Max Martin is king of the hill, but there are numerous other Swedish writer / producer stars including Johan "Shellshock" Schuster (Britney, Pink, Adam Lambert, Usher, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5), Tore Johannson (Cardigans, Franz Ferdinand, OK Go, Bonnie Pink, Tom Jones), Bagge & Peer (Madonna, Celine Dion, Cyndi Lauper, Jennifer Lopez), Johan Aberg (Christina Aguilera, Cher, Jessica Simpson), Bloodshy & Avant (BoA, Girl’s Generation, Sky Ferreira, Madonna) and Bjorn Yttling (Chrissie Hynde, Primal Scream, Franz Ferdinand, Lykkle Li, he is also a member of Peter Bjorn and John). And their current artists are also shining brightly, a sampling –
1. Avicii- born Tim Bergling just age 25 he has already had an incredible career. He is one of the most highly paid DJ’s in the world, is much in demand to do remixes and produce, has advertising deals with big brands, and he has been nominated for Grammys He has written with many top artists, including with David Guetta, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, and Chris Martin (on the new Coldplay album), and he has had a sting of hit songs under his own name such as "Levels" and "Wake Me Up!". And he is handsome and has an estimated net worth of $60 million, and he recently bought a $15.5 million mansion in LA.
2. Icona Pop- are a very mainstream photogenic dance pop duo who currently face the enviable problem, following up their mega-smash worldwide hit "We Love It". They have already toured as openers for Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, been on American TV in numerous ways, and in adverts for Coca-Cola and Samsung.
3. Arch Enemy- like their neighbors Finland and Norway, Sweden has done exceptionally well with heavy metal. The Nordic countries have exceptionally strong arts/ music programs, and while perhaps not the direct intention, have churned out some spectacular metal musicians. Also a number of pop producers, such as Shellshock, got their starts in metal. Arch Enemy formed as something of a supergroup, bringing together players who had played in established metal bands. Japan was one of the first territories where they became popular, but they are now worldwide. They recently released their tenth album “War Eternal”, and made an unusual announcement, their singer would leave the band, but remain their business manager.
4. Movits!- are a trio of brothers who mixes hip-hop and swing jazz, and make nutty, fun videos. The trio have toured all over the world, including to Japan, and are about to start another tour of America in support of their new album "Alaska".
5. Little Dragon- are an electronic pop band with a far-reaching mixture of influences. They are fronted by Yukimi Nagano, child of a Japanese father and Swedish- American mother. The group are influenced by reggae, jazz and hip-hop, amongst others. After a single on their own label, they signed to the British indie Peacefrog, and slowly gather fans, taking a step forward in 2010 after being asked to join Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz, and in the US after their song "Twice" was used in a number of TV dramas. Nagano has also worked with SBTRKT and DJ Shadow. Their newest album "Nabuma Rubberband" was released early summer this year.
6. The Radio Dept.- are a clever pop band of which Johan Duncanson is the only constant. Some have called them "dream pop" for their generally soft, floating, romantic style, and they have been compared to such dissimilar artists as the Pet Shop Boys and Cocteau Twins. Unlike Icona Pop, who burst suddenly onto the charts, The Radio Dept. have been slowly but steadily gaining a worldwide audience since 1995, releasing just three albums and have a strong cult following in Japan where the indie Awdr/ir2 releases their music (Labrador in the UK, Darla in USA). One of their first breaks was having their song used in Sofia Copola’s "Marie Antoinette". In 2011 they were nominated for Swedish Grammis for "album of the year" and "band of the year" and release “Passive Aggressive: Singles 2002-2012”. Since then they have toured the USA, Latin America and Turkey.
7. Robyn- born to an acting family, she became voice actress and singer who started working professionally at age ten. At sixteen she made her major label debut doing dance pop music. In 2004 she split from her label and started doing edgier electropop, and her first album on her own "Robyn" went to #1 in Sweden, which led to a collaboration on "Hey U" with Basement Jaxx, and work with Rokyskopp, Diplo, Brtiney Spears and Snoop Dogg, and other artists covering her songs. This was followed by the humorous "Konnichiwa Bitches" which also became a hit. In 2008 she served as opening act for some of Madonna’’s European tour. In 2014 she is touring with Rokyskopp in support of her EP "Do It Again"
8. Rafven- are an unorthodox band playing a mix of gypsy, punk, folk and klezmer music. If that sounds crazy, it’s because it is. The eight piece includes an accordion player, a violinist, a sax player and somebody who plays just a Bulgarian tambura, but some how they rock hard. Their albums are available in Japan on hip indie Uncleowen. They were a surprise hit of Fuji Rock 2009, where they played an amazing nine times, including at the Ganban booth where they were signing goods. Their performance at the Orange Court had people dancing like mad despite the mud and rain. They were called back for another tour in 2010, and are overdue to return again.
9. Junip- is a duo of Jose Gonzalez and Tobias Winterkornon. They have a delicate, haunting, folky sound, given texture with synth washes. Jose is of Argentinian descent but grew up in Sweden. His first band was punk, but he became well known for accompanying himself on classical guitar, often doing covers such as Joy Division and Bruce Springsteen. His version of the Knife’s "Heartbeats" became a big hit and was used in a popular Sony CM. Considering that his solo career was going well it was surprising to his fans that he joined Junip, which was originally a trio, but he does not seem concerned about following traditional paths.
10. Lykkle Li- is an exotic blend of sounds, she cites as influences Neil Young, the Shangri-las and This Mortal Coil. Perhaps this is not surprising considering her background, which included living on a mountain top in Portugal for five years and stays in India, Lisbon, Morocco, Nepal and New York. Her debut album "Youth Novels" was released on a local indie LL, but was eventually released in countries around the world (but not Japan). Her sparse, soulful sound also drew attention from fellow musicians and has led to collaborations with Royskopp, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, David Lynch and her singing on the new U2 album. Her music has also been used extensively in film, and her third album "I Never Learn" produced the hit "No Rest For the Wicked"
11. Niki & the Dove- are the duo Malin (striking blonde female vocalist) and Gustaf (producer), their sparse, dramatic sound won over European radio DJ’s from very early in their career, and they have gone on to sign to Moshi Moshi in the UK and Sub Pop in the USA.
12. Nonono- is production team Astma & Rockwell, plus singer Stina Wappling, there sound largely synth dance pop, and produced the song "Pumpin’ Blood" which has sold over 700,000 copies so far.
13. The Royal Concept- are a four piece pop rock band, currently riding high with the worldwide hit single "On Our Way", as well as having a number of tracks placed in games, TV and film.
