キャリア15年を数えるLAのエクスペリメンタル・トリオが放った3枚目のアルバムは、デンジャー・マウス主宰の新興レーベル発、しかもブーツがプロデュース……と話題性の高い一枚だ。冒頭から呪術的な歌声とトライバルなビート、そしてノイジーな電子音の応酬に面喰らうも、“Junk For Code”ではトム・ヨークのソロ作品にも通じるメランコリックなムードを演出し、まんまビートルズ風味（以前“Helter Skelter”もカヴァーしていた）の“Change My Head”みたいな楽曲もあり、聴き手を飽きさせない。思えば、ドラマーのカーラはジャック・ホワイトのソロ・アルバム及びツアーに参加、映画「Frank」への出演も好評だったし、ギタリストのグレッグはフェイラーを再結成、フロントマンのユージンはナイン・インチ・ネイルズ作品に招かれるなど、多彩な外部活動で培った各々の経験がプラスに働いているのだろう。ライヴも凄そうなので、あとは頓挫した日本版〈ATP〉のリヴェンジをぜひ!

Marking 15 years since their formation, Autolux, an LA-based experimental trio, drop their third album with two killer selling points: it is produced by Boots and released through Danger Mouse’s new label. The opening track is a bewildering mix of shamanic vocal, tribal percussion and blazing electric noise. In contrast, “Junk For Code” is infused with a melancholic mood akin to Thom Yorke’s solo work and “Change My Head” bears a strong resemblance to the Beatles’ songs (the band have also covered “Helter Skelter”), holding your attention throughout. This diversity is probably the result of the experiences each member had through their various side projects: drummer Carla Azar joined Jack White’s solo album and tour and also starred in the [Frank] movie to critical acclaim; guitarist Greg Edwards was reunited with Failure; and vocalist Eugene Goreshter was featured in a Nine Inch Nails piece. Autolux’s promising live performance could have been seen at the Japanese version of ATP festival had it not been called off. Hopefully, another attempt will be made.
